É professor emérito de História Africana na Universidade de Chicago, onde antes presidiu à comissão de estudos africanos e afro-americanos e ao Programa de Relações Internacionais. Entre as suas publicações contam-se “African Economic History: Internal Development and External Dependency” (1987), “In Search of Sunjata: the Mande Oral Epic as History, Literature and Performance” (1998), “Middlemen of the Cameroon Rivers: the Duala and their Hinterland” (1998), “Trans-Saharan Africa in World History” (2010) e “Viewing African Cinema in the Twenty-First Century: Art Films and the Nollywood Video Revolution”. Neste momento, realiza uma investigação sobre o intelectual e escritor maliano Amadou Hampâté Bâ e um trabalho provisoriamente intitulado ”The Road to Postcoloniality: European Overseas Expansion, Global Capitalism and the Transformation of Africa, the Caribbean and India”.
